[The Cutting Room] The Carpenter: Remembering Cardiff with Homeboy Sandman

I recently had spoken to Homeboy Sandman for the latest issue of The Hardcopy, but due to boardroom politics and a limited space in the magazine, we came to a collective decision to present this online. The following article is uplifted from The Hardcopy blog.

A lot has changed since Homeboy Sandman's debut performance in Cardiff last February. Between the Cardiff Arts Institute recently closing its doors and The Hardcopy’s rebirth, the biggest change in Homeboy Sandman's case however, just might be his recent signing to powerhouse indie label Stones Throw Records. For lack of a better phrase, last years The Good Sun became our only good sun at The Hardcopy, serving as a soundtrack to our Spring/Summer. For Homeboy Sandman, though, the future is certain to get brighter. With plans of another UK tour, what better way to promote this and reflect upon his career then to unveil an up until now "lost interview".

On performing in Cardiff, Wales’s now defunct venue C.A.I earlier this year.

It was slamming, sun. Spot was packed with heads with true appreciation for beautiful Hip Hop music. I was very impressed.

On Cardiff’s energy versus others show prior in the UK.

There were some other UK spots with excellent energy, but Cardiff definitely had a unique feel and talking to people afterwards, it was obvious that it's a very Hip Hop rich community. Cats are very much up on the history and the culture.

On Cardiff based emcee D. Gritty.

I wish I had caught D. Gritty's opening set before me. I was trying to take a nap in the green room and missed it. I did get to watch some D. Gritty stuff online afterwards, though. I believe I saw the zoo joint. I think that's what it was talking about! That was pretty fresh.

On collaboration with Associated Minds’ Ruffstylz.

You can expect to hear magnificent bars and that beat is def, too. That whole record I'm feeling. I flip a new flow as usual and Ruffstylz comes off as well. He and the Associated Minds crew have a lot of talent.

On working with rising producer Mr. Digital.

I did a joint with Mr. Digital called "Can you feel it". It is the feel of New York City at 6am on a summer morning. When the joint drops cats will bug. Digital has sensational production. I'm hoping that this is our first of multiple joints.

On ciphering with Ruffstylz on the Oner's rooftop.

That was slamming! I was in Cardiff, but I felt like I was home. (Editor’s note: Check out the cipher here)

On Cardiff’s graff scene.

The little I saw was pretty phenomenal. I saw some world class stuff that was as good as anything in the states.

On forthcoming album.

“Kool Herc (Fertile Crescent)” will be dropping later this year, early 2012 latest. It's already done. Just finalising specifics. I’ll see you out there in October, sun.
